Santa Claus - history of creation and interesting facts

Practically all of us associate Santa Claus with red clothes, a sack full of presents for children, as well as a long grey beard. In addition to all this, there are reindeer that pull the sleigh. However, a few hundred years ago people imagined this character quite differently.

This character is first mentioned in the Middle Ages, where lived a bishop whose name was Nicholas. He lived in Turkey in the second century in a town called Mira. He was distinguished by the fact that he gave away his money and everything he had to the poorer people without boasting about it to anyone. This is what distinguished him from other bishops who lived at that time. Since then, December 6 was celebrated in Konstatinopolis on the occasion of St. Nicholas.

Depending on the city and country this custom was celebrated differently at the beginning. For example, in France nuns themselves made such packages with gifts and carried them to poor families. As far as the appearance itself is concerned, such a bigger change took place where they started to model the Sinterkas in the Netherlands. It was there that for the first time this character was presented as an old man who was dressed in a bishop's robe. He would give out different kinds of gifts to good children or to people who wished for it.
Once again the Saint was depicted in poems including Moor's 1882 Christmas Eve Night in a drawing of his poem. This drawing depicted the North Pole. Therefore, it is very likely that Laponie is now accepted as the country of origin. Then there was Finladnia and a large toy factory which was produced with the help of his helpers, the Elves. The region of Lapland benefited from this and so it was decided to create a Santa Claus village in the town of Rovaniemi as a great tourist attraction relating to this character. This is how the character looked like from a historical point of view.

Who was Nicholas and where did he come from?

He was born in 270 and was bishop of Myra in Licja. Little information survives about this man, but we can be sure that his place of birth is Licja in Turkey. Interestingly, he came from a rich family where there was no poverty. He inherited a great fortune from his parents. He could live however he wanted, but he decided to give it away and take care of poor people. He especially cared for small and poor children. He always remembered and cared that they should not go hungry and that they should not lack basic things. He always loved to help and if there was any kind of action he was very willing to engage in it. You could hear about his help everywhere and that is how he became the bishop of this region.

Santa Claus Village.

It all started with the construction of a hut for tourists in Rovaniemi. It was all thanks to help from UNICEF, then President Roosevelt came here, followed by other famous people, and so the hut began to expand. New restaurants, cafes, as well as a post office and souvenir stores were established. The village of Rovaniema for years was considered to be the seat of the Saint, so in the 80s it was decided to take advantage of this fact and a little commercialization of this hut by creating an amusement park. Every year more than 100,000 letters are sent to the village from children in all countries of the world.

Attractions that are located in the village:

Post office - we can not only send a letter but also buy all kinds of souvenirs related to this story and the whole holiday in general

Arctic Circle - this is the village where the Arctic Circle line passes through

Office - this is the main seat of the character we write about. Tourists from all over the world can talk to him as well as take souvenir photos.
