Coloring pages with the Easter Bunny - history and interesting facts about how he appeared in the basket

The Easter bunny has long been a familiar and popular symbol associated with this religious holiday - but have you ever wondered about the origins of the symbol and how exactly this cute, fluffy woodland creature became such a common symbol of Easter?

There's a surprising amount of history behind the mythical tale of the bunny bringing eggs on Easter Sunday, and not just because he's cute! It has a long and deeply rooted history in Christian holidays - and even in pagan traditions. Here's what you need to know about the fascinating origins of this custom before you greet the holiday where you head to church to bless the basket with Easter eggs and the very animal with which we decorate the basket

There is no mention in the Bible of the mythical rabbit that delivers eggs to children on the day of Jesus Christ's resurrection - so how exactly did it become a prominent symbol of one of Christianity's most important holidays? One theory, holds that the rabbit symbol derives from an ancient pagan tradition that is believed to have initiated the celebration of Easter - the festival of Eostre, which worshipped the goddess of fertility and spring. Apparently, the animal symbol of the goddess was the rabbit, which had long traditionally symbolized fertility. This is also how this tradition came to Christians.

As for how the animal came to be in America, it was as follows. It was first introduced in the 1700s by German immigrants in Pennsylvania, who reportedly brought their tradition of egg-laying hares with them. As the story goes, the hare laid colored eggs as gifts for good children - so the children made nests where the hare could leave his eggs, and even sometimes left carrots in case the hare got hungry! Eventually, the custom spread across America and became a common Easter tradition - over time, the supply of the famous bunny expanded from eggs to other treats like chocolate and toys.
