Latin for via crucis, it is a Lenten service in the Catholic Church during which the Stations of the Cross and all the stations up to Jesus' death and laying in the tomb are opened.
The tradition originated in Jerusalem, where the cross was found, and led to many pilgrimages from around the world to the Holy Land. All 14 stations were first recreated in 1741 by St. Leonardo, who created the Stations of the Cross in the Roman Colossus.
As for the Polish Way of the Cross, there are usually 14 stations marked on the walls of each church and the faithful walk from station to station every Friday. At the very beginning we always have altar boys who carry the cross with candles
