Woody Woodpecker is a cartoon baby bird created by Walter Lantz and created by Ben Hardaway, producer and animator at Walter Lantz Productions, and screenwriter Milt Schaffer. He first appeared in the 1940 animated film "Knock Knock."
Woody's distinctive laugh is as well-known as the character himself. The laugh was recorded by Mel Blanc, who provided the voice for Woody in the first three films. Later, the character's voice was lent by the filmmaker himself, Walter Lantz.
Woody was originally intended to be a one-off character, but he quickly gained popularity and became a pop culture icon. He appeared in many animated short films, comic books and even video games. Woody's character has changed over the years - from an early bird who liked to play pranks on others, he has evolved into a more sympathetic character.
