Canary for children

The domestic canary, commonly known as the canary, is a domesticated variety of the wild canary, a small family bird. The first domestic canaries were brought to Europe by Spanish sailors who bred these birds in captivity in the 17th century. These fashionable, expensive birds were originally bred only in royal courts. Today, canaries are generally available and are very often household pets.
