Swallow - interesting facts and information

  1. Appearance: Swallows have slender bodies, long, narrow wings, short legs and narrow, pointed tails. Many species have metallic shiny plumage, usually in blue, black, white or gray.
  2. Nutrition: Swallows are insectivorous and feed on insects they catch in flight. With their long wings and fast flight, they can easily chase and catch insects in mid-air.
  3. Reproduction: Swallows are known for building unique nests. Some species, such as the spring swallow, build nests out of mud on the sides of buildings or under bridges. Females lay several eggs, which are then incubated by both parents.
  4. Migrations: Swallows are known for their long-distance migrations. Many species spend their summers in temperate or polar regions of the northern hemisphere, and spend their winter migrations in tropical regions of the southern hemisphere. These migrations can span thousands of kilometers.
  5. Status and protection: Populations of some swallow species have declined due to habitat loss, climate change and pesticide pollution. However, most swallow species are not considered to be in danger of extinction.
  6. Symbolism: Swallows are present in many cultures and mythologies. They are often a symbol of hope, renewal and homecoming, due to their migrations and habit of returning to the same place to make a nest. In some cultures, such as the seafaring culture, tattoos with swallows were a symbol of returning home safely or covering long distances.
