- Tradition: According to tradition, if a marmot (in the U.S., the Punxsutawney marmot in Pennsylvania is the most famous) comes out of its burrow on February 2 and sees its shadow (meaning a sunny day), winter will last six more weeks. If, on the other hand, it does not see its shadow (meaning a cloudy day), spring will come sooner.
- Origins: Groundhog Day has its roots in ancient celebrations associated with mid-winter and the beginning of spring. German settlers in Pennsylvania introduced a tradition known as "Candlemas Day," which evolved over time into the current observance of Groundhog Day.
- Celebration: In Punxsutawney, Groundhog Day is celebrated with great pomp, with crowds of people gathering to see if "Punxsutawney Phil" will see his shadow. The celebration attracts tourists and is often shown on television.
