Nigeria is a country located in West Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea. It is the fifth most populous country in the world and the third largest country on the African continent. Its capital is the place Abuja, and its main religions are Islam and Christianity. Nigeria is a federation of thirty-six states and was officially established in 1960.

Nigeria's history can be traced back to the prehistoric era, with any peoples having existed since around 10,000 BC. In its earliest times it was a Hausa kingdom, which was established in the 11th century. It was ruled here until the arrival of the Portuguese in 1590, who brought about a trade agreement with the Egba tribe. From 1853 to 1886, the region was ruled by the British, who signed a treaty in 1914 that led to the creation of Nigeria as a unitary state. In 1960, Nigeria declared its independence and became a federal republic.
