Plesiosaur (Plesiosaurus) is a genus of extinct marine reptiles in the plesiosaur group (Plesiosauria) that lived during the Early and Middle Jurassic period, about 200-175 million years ago.

Plesiosaurus - interesting facts and information

  1. Appearance: Plesiosaurus had a distinctive shape with a long neck, small head, stocky body and four large fins. Unlike most marine animals today, Plesiosaurus used all four fins to move underwater. The body length of adult specimens is estimated at around 3-5 meters.
  2. Diet: Plesiosaurus was a predator that probably fed on fish and other small marine animals. It had a large number of sharp, conical teeth, ideal for grasping and holding slippery prey.
  3. Disposition: Plesiosaur fossils have been found mainly in Europe, although some evidence suggests they may have lived in other parts of the world.
  4. Discovery: The first plesiosaur fossils were discovered in England in the 19th century by a significant paleontologist, Mary Anning. They were among the first discovered fossils of large prehistoric marine animals and contributed to the development of paleontology as a science.
  5. Extinction: Like many other large marine reptiles, Plesiosaurus became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago, in a mass extinction at the turn of the Cretaceous and Paleogene.

The plesiosaur is one of the most iconic marine dinosaurs and often appears in pop culture, where it is usually depicted as a large, long-necked sea creature. In fact, the term "dinosaur" is technically reserved for a specific group of terrestrial reptiles, and the plesiosaur, though a contemporary of dinosaurs, belongs to a separate group called plesiosaurs.
