Skink - interesting facts and information

Skinks can range in size from small species of 7.5 centimeters in length to large skinks, such as the giant skink from Australia, which can reach up to 60 centimeters in length. They have smooth, shiny skin covered with scales and are usually light brown, gray or greenish in color, although some species can be brightly colored.

Most skinks are terrestrial and have a terrestrial lifestyle, although some are well adapted to living in trees and others to swimming. They are usually insectivorous, although some species are herbivorous or omnivorous.

Skinks are known for their ability to autotomy, a process in which they can discard part of their tail to avoid a predator and then regenerate it over time.

Unfortunately, many skink species are endangered or at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, climate change and the introduction of foreign predators into their habitats. Nevertheless, they are still common in many parts of the world and are often found in homes as pets.
