Yak - interesting facts and information

The wild yak is one of the largest mammals on earth, with adult males weighing between 1,000 and 1,200 kilograms. They are animals with massive bodies, long horns and thick fur that protects them from the cold in harsh high mountain conditions. The wild yak is an endangered species, with a small population that continues to decline due to hunting and habitat loss.

The domestic yak is much more common and is an important livestock animal for people in the mountainous regions of Asia. Domestic yaks are used as draft animals, for milk, cheese, meat and as a source of wool. The milk of the yak is particularly prized in some cultures for its high fat content.

Yaks are adapted to life at high altitudes and are able to survive in conditions that would be too harsh for many other large mammals. They are herd animals that live in groups composed of females and their young, with adult males often living a solitary lifestyle outside of the mating season.
