Egypt's emblem depicts the eagle of Saladin, an Arab-Muslim hero of the Crusader Wars. Saladin is the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. In 1187, he inflicted a devastating defeat on the armies of the Kingdom of Jerusalem at Hittin, after which he captured almost all the lands of the Crusader state, including Jerusalem.
