Grandmother's Day - We celebrate this holiday in Poland once a year on January 21 as well as other countries, while in countries such as Brazil, Spain and Bulgaria this holiday is celebrated on July 26. This day was first celebrated in our country in 1964 and it is quite a new and young custom.
In other countries, such as France, it is a movable holiday that always falls on the last day of March. There it is called Café Grand'Mère, which means coffee for Grandma. It is also popular there to prepare a laurel and to organize a competition for the prettiest laurel.
In Russia, the holiday officially appeared for the first time only in 2009 - there it is combined with the grandfather's holiday. However, so far there is no fixed date when it is celebrated.
Let us now move to the USA where it is an official holiday created in 1978 where it was officially approved by the US Congress. This day is celebrated with all kinds of festivities and performances. It falls a day a week after Labor Day.
We return to Europe to see how it looks like in the UK - there the holiday is called in English as: National Grandparents Day and celebrated on the first Sunday of October - it is gaining in popularity every year.
Grandparents' Day - In Poland Grandmothers' Day is celebrated one day later than Grandmothers' Day but sometimes these celebrations are held on the same day. In particular when it comes to various festivals or shows and performances in schools attended by grandchildren. This holiday has come to Poland most probably from America.
In the USA and Canada it is simply a holiday called National Grandparents Day and has its own unique song that is played on every radio and television station on that day. It is called: A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.
In Russia this holiday appeared only in 2009 and is also celebrated as one day but there is no official date. In the UK it is a one day celebration on the first Sunday in October. The family gets together and celebrates this special occasion.
