Interesting facts about space
1) Our Sun is over 300,000 times larger than Earth and Halley's comet enters our inner Solar System only every 75 years. The last time it was visible from Earth was in 1986 and the next time will be in 2061.
2) Venus has a temperature of over 450 degrees C and is listed as the hottest planet in our solar system. Scientists believe our solar system formed more than 4.6 billion years ago.
3) Several planets have rings including Saturn, but there are other planets in our solar system that have rings, these are Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. Their rings are just not as large and obvious.
4) The moon has no wind blowing around and covering the footprints and rover tire tracks that were left by the astronauts. It is believed that these footprints will remain there for millions of years.
5) Mars has a lower gravity than Earth. A person who weighs 100 kg on Earth would weigh only 35 kg if standing on Mars. Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that rotates sideways, and Venus is the only planet in our solar system that rotates backwards relative to the other planets.
6) NASA results show strong evidence that Mars may have liquid water. Comets are composed of sand, ice and carbon dioxide and are remnant materials from the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago.
7) Planets that have no solid matter are called gas planets. The gas giants in our solar system are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are almost entirely gaseous, so you would not be able to walk on them.
8) Over the years of space travel, humans have left a lot of junk in Earth's orbit. These are called "space junk" and it is believed that there are 600,000 pieces of space junk in orbit as of today.
9) Our planet is hit by an asteroid about the size of a car about once a year. Fortunately, most of them burn up in the atmosphere before they hit the earth.
10 ) Scientists believe that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches. Also it is an incredible number how many stars there are in the whole world.
11) The closest planet to the Sun is Mercury, but Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System. Venus has an average temperature of about 450 degrees C. Other than Earth, scientists believe that the only planet in the Solar System that may be hospitable to life is most likely Mars. This is due to the 1986 discovery of a rock from Mars that is believed to contain microscopic fossils.
