Information & Trivia
Mazda Motor Corporation simply known as Mazda, is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer based in Fuchu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. In 2015, Mazda produced more than 1.5 million vehicles, but most of them, nearly one million, in Japan alone. This achievement allowed Mazda to rank as the 15th largest automaker in the world in terms of production.
In the beginning, the company produced completely different products as they were corks. In 1931 Toyo Kogyo changed its business profile from the production of corks and started manufacturing machine tools and then three-wheeled vehicles, the first model of which was called Mazda-Go. In 1984, Toyo Kogyo changed its name to Mazda. In the early 1960s, Mazda, inspired by the German NSU Ro 80 rotary-engine car, decided to follow the same path and began developing the Wankel rotary engine to achieve a unique identity that distinguished Mazda from other Japanese car companies. To achieve this, Mazda had to enter into a business and technical partnership with the German company NSU, which eventually led to the production of the Mazda Cosmo Sport in 1967. To this day, Mazda remains the only manufacturer of Wankel rotary engines in the automotive industry.
