- Oldest team: The Montreal Canadiens, founded in 1909, is the oldest continuously operating team in the NHL and pre-dates the league itself.
- Primary Six: Before the 1967 expansion, the NHL consisted of only six teams: the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. They are often referred to as the "Original Six".
- Stanley Cup: Although it is identified with the NHL, the Stanley Cup was originally introduced in 1893 as a prize for the best field hockey team in Canada, before the NHL was even established.
- Unusual delay: In 1996, a game between the Boston Bruins and the Florida Panthers was delayed when a giant bat started flying over the ice!
