- Date: The date of Chinese New Year depends on the lunar-solar calendar and falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, usually between January 21 and February 20.
- Trump: The holiday lasts 15 days, ending with the full moon, known as the Lantern Festival. The first two days are usually the most festive, during which families come together for meals and celebrations.
- Traditions: Chinese New Year traditions include exchanging red envelopes (hongbao) containing money, letting off fireworks, preparing special foods, and cleaning the house to get rid of bad luck and attract good fortune.
- Zodiac sign: Each Chinese New Year is associated with one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. 2023, for example, is the year of the Water Rabbit.
- Symbolism: Chinese New Year is a time of renewal and purification. It is an opportunity to get rid of negative energies from the past and welcome positive energies for the coming year.
- Lighthouse Festival: The 15th day of the New Year, known as the Lantern Festival, is the day when people take to the streets with colorful lanterns to celebrate the end of the holidays.
- Culinary: During Chinese New Year, many traditional dishes are prepared, such as jiaozi dumplings, fish (a symbol of longevity and abundance) and nian gao rice cake (a symbol of progress).
