- Goal of the game: The goal of the game is to score more points than the opponent by scoring touchdowns (touchdowns), kicking for a field goal (field goal) or scoring a safety (safety).
- Rules: The game is divided into "dows" or turns, during which the attacking team has four attempts to cover at least 10 yards. If they succeed, they receive another four downs. If not, they lose the ball to the opponent.
- Teams: each team has 11 players on the field. The team is divided into three specialized units: offensive (offense), defensive (defense) and special (dealing with kickoffs, among other things).
- Points: A touchdown (touchdown) is worth 6 points and is scored when the ball crosses the opponent's end line of the field. After scoring a touchdown, the team has a chance to score additional points by kicking (extra point, 1 point) or attempting to score two points (2-point conversion). A kick on goal (field goal) is worth 3 points, and a safety (when an offensive player is pinned to the ground in his end zone) is worth 2 points.
- Playing time: A standard American soccer game consists of four 15-minute quarters. The clock is often stopped, making the actual game time much longer.
- Major leagues: The most important American soccer league is the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. Other important organizations include the NCAA (railroad American soccer) and the CFL (Canadian Football League).
