Malaysia's history begins in prehistoric times, when the first humans began to inhabit the region. The earliest traces of human presence in Malaysia date back to about 40,000 BC. As peoples migrated and conquered the region, they made Malaysia overflowing with cultural and ethnic diversity. About 2,500 years ago, Chinese and Indian migrations arrived in Malaysia, and about 1,000 years ago the Mons and Khmer tribes arrived. In the 15th century, Malaysia was occupied by the Mayan Empire. In 1511, the Portuguese occupied Penang as their military base, which was part of the Portuguese maritime empire. Since then, there has been an expansion of British and Dutch trade hostages and colonizers. In 1948, the Malaysian government declared independence, and in 1957, Malaysia proclaimed independence. Today, Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and three overseas territories.
