General Grievous is a local military commander, then general and commander-in-chief of the Separatist forces. Before the alliance with the separatists, his name was Qymaen jai Sheelal. Grievous belonged to the Kaleesh race, for years invaded and oppressed by the more technologically advanced Yam'rii of the nearby planet Huk, called "Huk."
