In our country there is a tradition that on February 14th couples in love give each other gifts. Usually these are gifts with a small symbol of love such as teddy bears with hearts, heart-shaped lollipops or, less and less common, ordinary Valentine's Day cards.
History of the day of lovers
This holiday began as early as the Middle Ages and is celebrated in the South and West. Catholics have their own patron saint of this holiday and that is of course Saint Valentine.
It is interesting to note that they are derived from an ancient holiday called Lupercalia, which was a fertility festival celebrated on February 15. According to tradition, Saint Valentine was a bishop who performed top-secret marriage ceremonies for soldiers, while defying the decision of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor forbade and opposed the marriages of young men, believing that they were not mature enough to enter such an adult and responsible life, telling them to focus on fighting instead of marriage.
This was a great shock to the Romans, but they were afraid to oppose the emperor. The bishop knew that the young Romans were not happy about it and could not get married so he decided to marry them in secret. Unfortunately this information soon reached the Emperor and he had Valentine killed. This happened on February 14, which is why this holiday is celebrated on this day.
