Jesus:

  1. Religious significance: Jesus Christ is the central figure of Christianity as the Son of God and Savior of mankind. His life and teachings form the doctrinal and ethical foundation of this religion.
  2. Birth: According to the Gospel according to Luke and the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the son of Mary and the Holy Spirit. The birth of Jesus is celebrated as Christmas.
  3. Childhood and youth: The Gospels contain little information about Jesus' childhood and youth. We know from the descriptions that he lived in Nazareth and that he was known as a carpenter.
  4. Public Activities: Jesus began his public activity around the age of 30, preaching moral, spiritual and ethical teachings, as well as healing the sick and performing miracles. His teaching focused on love of neighbor, repentance and the coming kingdom of God.
  5. The Cross and the Resurrection: Jesus was crucified on the orders of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. According to the Gospels, three days after his death, he rose from the dead, a central event in Christian beliefs.
  6. Theological significance: In Christian theology, Jesus is considered to be God incarnate - the second person of the Trinity. His sacrifice on the cross is interpreted as an act of salvation of mankind from sin.

Mary:

  1. Virgin Mary: Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ. The Gospels describe that she was endowed with special divine grace and was a virgin at the time of Jesus' birth. Her virginity is a key dogma in Catholic and Orthodox theology.
  2. Annunciation: According to the Gospel according to Luke, the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the mother of the Son of God. Her consent to this is called Mary's "Yes".
  3. The Nativity of Jesus: Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem, as described in the Gospels.
  4. The role of the Mother of God: In Christianity, Mary is revered as the Mother of God and considered the spiritual mother of all the faithful. In different strands of Christianity, she has been assigned various titles, such as "Virgin Mary," "Mother of God Immaculately Conceived" or "Queen of Heaven."
  5. Presence in the life of Jesus: The Gospels mention Mary in the context of important events in the life of Jesus, such as the birth, presentation in the temple, the cross and the resurrection.
  6. Contemporaneity: The worship of Mary is alive in many Christian denominations. Mary is also an important part of Catholic spirituality, where prayers to her are significant.

trivia

Jesus:

  1. Connections to history and archaeology: The historical existence of Jesus is the basis for religious beliefs, but apart from the Gospel accounts, no independent historical sources have survived to confirm his existence. Some archaeological finds, however, suggest the existence of a place called the "House of Jesus" in Nazareth.
  2. Variety of interpretations: The figure of Jesus and his teachings have been interpreted in different ways by different Christian groups, leading to the formation of many denominations and churches with different doctrines.
  3. Meaning in Islam: In Islam, Jesus (in Arabic, Isa) is considered one of the great prophets and messiahs, but not the Son of God. He is described in the Quran and hadis as a figure of special significance.
