Hajj and Umrah - interesting facts and information
Hajj:
- Time: Hajj takes place once a year, in the 12th month of the Islamic calendar, called Dhu al-Hijjah. It is a specific time that must be observed.
- Requirements: Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam that every adult Muslim should abide by, as long as they are both physically and financially capable.
- Rituals: Hajj involves a series of rituals that last for five days, including the rite of Tawaf (circling the Kaaba seven times), passing between the hills of Safa and Marwa, the symbolic stoning of the devil (Jamaraat) and prayers at the sites of Arafat and Muzdalifah.
- Meaning: Hajj is an opportunity to atone for sins, renew spiritual faith and participate in rituals designed to emulate the conduct of the Prophet Muhammad.
Umrah:
- Time: Umrah can be performed at any time of the year, there is no set time.
- Requirements: Umrah, while highly recommended, is not mandatory like Hajj.
- Rituals: Umrah includes the ritual of Tawaf, or circling the Kaaba seven times, and Sa'i, passing seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa. It does not include other rituals that are part of Hajj.
- Meaning: Umrah is often referred to as a "minor pilgrimage" or "voluntary pilgrimage." It is an opportunity to renew spiritual faith, but does not replace the obligatory Hajj.
