Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), actually Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who became a leader of the national independence movement against British rule in India. He is widely recognized as the father of the Indian nation and one of the greatest advocates of pacifism and hatred in history.

Gandhi is best known for his development and application of "satyagraha" (truth-based pressure) tactics, a form of nonviolent resistance that became a key element of India's struggle for independence.
