Obama began his political career as an Illinois state senator, where he sat from 1997 to 2004. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, becoming the first African-American president in the country's history. His election campaign focused on promises of change, unity and hope, and his charismatic speeches won widespread public support.

As president, Obama has spearheaded a number of reforms and initiatives, including health care reform, fighting global warming, investing in renewable energy, reducing the number of U.S. troops stationed overseas, and supporting gay marriage equality.
