Tapir Coloring Book

Tapir - interesting facts and information

Tapirs are easily recognized by their distinctive appearance, which includes a short trunk, massive body and exceptionally long noses and upper lips that can move and grasp food much like an elephant's trunk. Depending on the species, tapirs can weigh between 150 and 300 pounds.

Although they may look a bit like pigs because of their stocky body, tapirs are actually more closely related to animals such as horses and rhinos. They have four toes on their front legs and three on their hind legs, which help them navigate soft and muddy terrain.

Tapirs are mostly nocturnal and spend a lot of time submerged in water, where they can swim and dive very well. They are herbivores, feeding on leaves, fruits, twigs and grass.

Unfortunately, all tapir species are now endangered due to hunting and habitat loss. However, environmental organizations around the world are taking steps to protect these unique and fascinating animals.
