The history of these agricultural machines

The first primitive harvester was a horse-drawn "harvester-mill" introduced in Michigan in 1836 and later used in California . This vehicle was not widely used until the 1930s, when tractor-drawn models appeared. A decade later, self-propelled machines appeared, capable of cutting swaths from 2.5 to 5.5 feet wide. Originally designed to harvest wheat, over time they came to be used to harvest many other crops.

How does this machine work ?

It is a cutting and gathering machine designed to take grain with a minimum of straw. The threshing cylinder smashes the grain from the heads against a concave surface. Some of the grain and chaff is delivered with the straw to the machine deck, where the grain is shaken out and delivered to the cleaner. Some of the grain and chaff goes directly to the cleaner where, with the help of screens and a blast of air, the grain is separated and cleaned. After passing through the air blast, the grain falls into the clean grain auger, which transports the grain to the elevator and into a storage tank. The straw falls out the back of the combine as a sheaf or is simply spread on the ground by a fan spreader. Some combines designed for steep slopes have the body supported on the frame by hydraulic cylinders that automatically adjust to keep the body level.
