Mandalas - meaning "wheel" or "discoid object" in Sanskrit, is a geometric pattern that has many symbols in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. They are believed to represent different aspects of the universe and are used as meditation instruments and prayer symbols, especially in China, Japan and Tibet.

In their most basic form, mandalas are circles contained within a square and arranged in sections that are organized around a single, central point. They are usually produced on paper or fabric, drawn on the surface with thread. As a stand-alone work of art, mandalas hold symbolic and meditative meaning beyond their vivid appearance.

What is a mandala?

The mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Asian cultures. It can be understood in two different ways: externally as a visual representation of the universe or internally as a guide for several practices that take place in many Asian traditions, including meditation. In Hinduism and Buddhism, it is believed that by entering the mandala and moving toward its center, one is guided through a cosmic process of transforming the universe from one of suffering to one full of joy and happiness.

Finally, the innermost circle represents rebirth and is made of lotus leaves.
